Child Dedication Request

A Biblical Perspective - 1 Samuel 1:27-28

"I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.
So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.
And he worshiped the Lord there."

The Biblical story of the first recorded act of child dedication is found in 1 Samuel Chapter 1:1-28. Based on this story, the following 3 guidelines emerge.

1) Child dedication is not making a decision for the child to accept Christ nor does it in any way insure that a child will make a personal commitment to the person of Jesus Christ.

2) Child dedication is an intentional act of commitment whereby the parents commit themselves and their home to the purpose of raising up a child in a spiritually nurturing home environment. In this sense, child dedication is actually a dedication of the parent(s). It implies that the parents or parent will, by example, live in such a way as to create a genuine desire within their child to become a fully devoted follower of the person of Jesus Christ at as early of an age as possible.

3) Child dedication should be performed only on the understanding of and commitment to the above principals. In the absence of such a commitment, it would be appropriate to postpone the act of dedication until such a time, as there is parental harmony with the principles on which baby dedication is founded.
